Dear: Fellow Artists,
My name is Jessie Brown and I am a graphic designer and partner
of the new Toronto design firm, Three Storey Studios. I initiated
the Sex Book Project, a non-profit project, with 100% of the proceeds
going to ACT (Aids Committee of Toronto).
My
partners at Three Storey Studios as well as some of our close friends
and colleagues have joined together to design and promote this book.
The Design team consists of Tania Meschino, Jenna Wiens, Jay Brown,
Andrew Kontra, Irit Porat and myself. Development of the overall
design of the book as well as getting submissions, sponsorship and
promoting this project has begun and we’re all very excited!
My
passion is art and design and while the commercial world of design
is challenging and thrilling in itself, it came to me that I really
wanted to do more. Art is such a cathartic release and this project
is about getting artists together to share their views, experiences,
and perspectives about the many issues under the broad theme of
sex. There are so many issues and topics society neglects to address
and this book is an outlet for that exploration. Sex is an intriguing
topic – sometimes controversial, sometimes taboo but, even
more so when the audience is able to view a variety of personal
perspectives. I intend for this book to be provocative and enlightening.
The
proceeds of this project are going to the Aids Committee of Toronto,
an organization I feel needs support. ACT works with people with
an increased risk of contracting HIV and educates them about prevention.
ACT also provides free, confidential, and practical support and
services to families and individuals living with HIV or AIDS.
AIDS
is a preventable disease in many cases and our goal for this project
is to increase the public’s awareness about ACT and AIDS.
Also, financial donations will enable ACT to provide more families
and individuals with care. Both the Sex Book Project and The AIDS
Committee of Toronto share the perspective that knowledge is power,
and creating awareness is a step in the right direction.
Also,
I feel it important to note that while the book does discuss AIDS,
it is not a book about AIDS. The book is about Sex, and all of the
many relevant issues and themes (both positive and negative).
